The Great North Run 2012: I’m In!

Next time I’m home, in September, I will be running in one of the world’s largest half marathons. It will be the fourth time I’ve ran in the Great North Run, but I’m just as excited as I was the first time I ran it. In fact, I’m even more excited because I’ve been away from home and I feel quite nostalgic about going back to my home city of Newcastle to be part of a half marathon.

I'll be running across the Tyne Bridge

In order to fulfill this New Year’s resolution I need to organise myself. With a lot of other things going on, I will have to make time to train. Last time I ran in this race I was in a running club and participating in quite a few road and cross country races. Now, halfway across the world, I’m on my own. At the end of this month I will be moving to Indonesia. It’s going to take me a while to find my feet and figure out the runner friendly and safe training routes. Hopefully I can rope Jimmy into joining me for a few jogs when we first arrive. Although, I have been warned he will not be running enough miles needed for half marathon training. Lazy.

River Tyne, Newcastle

Originally, when I entered the ballot for the race I promised myself I would just have an easy run and not worry about getting a certain time. Now, a measly few hours after being accepted, I’m already planning the time I aim to finish in. I can’t help it. I suppose it is important to make goals. To help with my training I’ve joined a website with lots of advice and tools for recording your training. I’ll also be using some of the resources to find good running routes from Mary at Food and Fun on the Run.

I’ll be updating my blog with my progress. From my training sessions to what I’m eating to stay fuelled. Wish me luck.
